The Horn of Winter

This is another guess about George R R Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" The books contain several references to the horn of Joramun also known as the horn of winter. In the book characters say that it is said that Joramun blew it and woke giants from the earth. spoiler alert -- those who have not read the 5 published books might learn some of their contents after the jump OK so the wildlings lead by Mance Rader excavated in the far North looking for Joramun's horn. Rader told John Snow that he had found it and showed him a giant horn. Stannis Baratheon and Melisandre of Asshai burned that horn finally, Rader admitted that, as far as he knew, that horn was just an unusually large horn which belonged to a giant. Two other horns are mentioned. One is alleged by Euron Crowseye to call dragons. Also it is definitely fatal to the person who sounds it. I think this is not related to the horn of Joramun. In contrast, there is a cracked horn which has no role in the first 5 books. John snow finds it along with obsidian weapons in a black cloak near the fist of the first men. It is clearly important. The weapons are presumably thousands of years old and the cloak is not rotten. It was left there to be found (a likely candidate is ice hands the corpse of a ranger who seems to be controlled by the three eyed crow). The obsidian weapons are extremely important as only obsidian can kill the white walkers. The horn must be important too. I tend to suspect that it is the horn of winter. John gave it to Samwise Tarly. Samwise took it on the retreat from the fist of the first men. I forget where it is at the end of book 5. Recall another guess. There is a fierce black tom cat with a chewed off ear who appears regularly and seems to dislike Lannisters. I suspect that this is Belarion the black pet kitten of Rhaenys Targaryen. I guess it is barely a spoiler to note that Lyanna Stark makes Eddard Stark promise things as she is dying. Also Eddard Stark never says anything about Jon Snow's mother (and doesn't seem the type to breed a bastard). My guess is that one of the secrets is that Jon Snow's mother is Lyanna Stark (his father being Rhaegar Targaryen). I guess the other secret is rape hell, she chose to run off with Rhaegar Targaryen (he isn't remembered as the rapist type by Barristan Selmy or Jorah Mormont). I suspect this is key as 3 surviving Targaryens are needed to ride 3 dragons. Brandon Stark had a vision of a dragon the day Winterfell burned. Also he is supposed to fly. I don't think this just means control flying Ravens. I had thought that Daenerys, Jon and Brandon were the three, but I now suspect that Aegon Targaryen VI might be one of them.

Cersei POV remembers a visit of Aegon Targaryen to Lannis Hall. She thought it would announce her betrothment to Rhaegar. Something happen between Tywin, Aegon, and Tywin's wife on this visit. The plan for Cersei's marriage to Rhaegar did not happen. And 9 months later Tyrion is born and Tywin's wife dies, leaving both Tywin and Cercei permanently embittered. But also, Tyrion could have be the third dragon rider?

I'm not sure it's worth my time (although others can certainly spend theirs as they chose) trying to figure where GRRM is going because I have lost faith that he himself knows. My prediction is that if and when he concludes the series there will be inconsistencies and things that were never explained.

He wrote great characters, great scenes, and a roller-coaster ride of a plot for several books. If he made a mistake it was trying to do too much - too many sub-plots, too many characters, too many macguffins, too many threads to weave into a tidy bow.

If I am wrong and he brings it off, he will deserve a Nobel Prize for Literature.

Here's a new one: Shireen Baratheon might be the third dragon. From the wiki on Stannis:

"Stannis orders Justin Massey to go with Tycho Nestoris to Braavos, where Justin will use the money given to him by the Iron Bank of Braavos to hire sellsword companies till he has a force no less than twenty thousand strong and then sail back to Westeros. Stannis also gives orders that if he is slain in the coming battle, Justin is still to do as instructed, with the intention of using the army to place his daughter, Shireen Baratheon, on the Iron Throne."

Maybe she is really Azor Ahai reborn, a messianic figure in the R'hllor faith, no Stannis. And she will lead an army twenty thousand strong to clean the North of Boltons and Freys. And then join up with Daenerys and Jon Snow to fight the White Walkers.
