Take as a given that the population of poor is extremely vast, while the rich ain't. The chance that an idea (a cure for cancer, a better mouse trap, a nice poem, etc) emerges from a citizen isn't highly correlated with wealth. Transfer payments are then, in effect, societal venture capital invested in increasing the chances that the vast pool of talent represented by the poor may generate innovations the society can than add to it's legacy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3621026.post-8160929526283147102007-06-12T21:28:00.000+02:002007-06-12T21:28:00.000+02:00Lean to Aristotle, and away from Plato, for econom...Lean to Aristotle, and away from Plato, for economics is not akin to physics but evolutionary biology in needs of a philosophical base.

anneAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3621026.post-26614265382728243802007-06-12T21:26:00.000+02:002007-06-12T21:26:00.000+02:00Robert Waldmann has really given us a grand post, ...Robert Waldmann has really given us a grand post, and now as Brad DeLong reminds me indirectly we need to have Robert read some Ernst Mayn on a philosophy of biology to take further this nice philosophical approach.

I do like this.

anneAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3621026.post-38710903782610779882007-06-11T21:07:00.000+02:002007-06-11T21:07:00.000+02:00http://www.calvorn.com/gallery/photo.php?photo=732...http://www.calvorn.com/gallery/photo.php?photo=7325&u=254856,17

Bobolink
Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge.

Nice.

anneAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
